Sand Play (1982) In this series Nomi Kaplan explores and revisits the delight in “playing in the sand” a state of playfulness inherent in her artistic work. In the case of Sandplay, Kaplan shapes sand into recognizable forms and images, animating them with additional materials, then captures them on film. “Sand comes alive with a drawn flowerpot growing a beautiful orchid; a man’s face with two stone eyes emerging from the sand; a luncheon consisting of plate, knife, fork and hand-coloured crab. ‘Playing at the beach’ takes on new meaning.” Nomi Kaplan |
