TORAH STUDIES          Shadows         Garden         Tzitzit

Shadows (2005-2006)

Unique to this series of work – both the constructions and the photographed images work together to reveal deeper insights on the meaning of the Torah form, both the tangible and the intangible. The wire-mesh Torah forms that Kaplan constructed are exhibited with the photographs of the forms and their shadows.

“In 2005 I began creating life-size Torahs in my studio, made of black aluminum screening, and embellishing them in various ways.  I photographed them in such a way as to capture the shadows in order to reveal the magic and spirit “inside” the Torahs. Many of these Torahs have a Japanese theme, to honour the bravery of the Japanese consul, Chiune Sugihara, whose visa saved my family by providing us safe passage from Lithuania to Japan and Canada in 1940.” Nomi Kaplan
