In the Sand Play series, Nomi Kaplan explores and revisits the delight of “playing in the sand”, a state of playfulness inherent in her artistic work. She shaped sand into recognizable forms and images, animated them with additional materials, then captured them on film.
“Sand comes alive with a drawn flowerpot growing a beautiful orchid; a man’s face with two stone eyes emerging from the sand; a luncheon consisting of plate, knife, fork and hand-coloured crab. ‘Playing at the beach’ takes on new meaning.” — Nomi Kaplan
